Portugal offers a lot of hotels for travelers to enjoy their vacation. Choosing the perfect hotel does not only affect your budget but also how your vacation in Portugal turns out.
Need to know
Generally speaking, the season determines the price per room. Because most cities and resorts have high season and low season, it’s quite easy to save money if you decide to travel during the low season, which is spring and autumn. However, on the Lisbon coast the tourist season is pretty much year round because of the beautiful weather and mild temperatures.
Also, in the cities the prices do not depend on the season but on the location. Generally the closer the hotel is located to the center, the higher the room prices.
The hotel’s rating (stars) also determines the price. The more stars a hotel has and the more facilities it offers, the more a room would cost.
In Lisbon, there are plenty of hotels to choose from. At a 3 star hotel located close to downtown you will pay about €100 per double room per night during the high season, although prices are the same during spring and autumn as well. Breakfast is included in the room price.
Further from the old city, in the newly urbanized area around the Parque das Nações, you will pay little over €110 per double room per night in a 4 star hotel. Breakfast is included in the room price and the hotel is located near public transport, making it easy to get to the main attractions.
In Porto, Portugal’s second largest city, , you will pay little over €65 per double room per night at HF Tuela Porto, a 3 star hotel, located right in the city center. Breakfast is included in the room price. The prices remain the same year round.
Grande Hotel Do Porto is a 3 stars hotel, the oldest in the city, located within very short distance of major sights and entertainment possibilities. A double room here costs about €95 per night. The prices remain the same year round.
If you are heading to the Algarve, you don’t need to stay at expensive resorts. You can choose among the nice 2 or 3 stars hotels in the area. If you are on a tiny budget, head to the self-catering 2 star hotel Algamar, located at just 5 minutes from the Marina. Just be careful to book well in advance because the hotel fills up really quickly.
At just a few minutes walk from the beach, you’ll find hotel Alba, yet another self-catering hotel although you can also eat breakfast in their restaurant. Again, make sure to book well in advance if you plan to go there during the summer.
